Naesgaard's Market Picks Peas

Where: Naesgaard’s Farm & Market, 5681 Mary Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 2, 2018 - 9:00am to 6:30pm

What is it: Picking first peas of season today ...also nugget potatoes and strawberries. Browse Naesgaard's shop & greenhouses for fashions, plants & decor.


Beaver "Tail" Gate BBQ Party

Where: Beaver Creek Hall, 8505 Beaver Creek Rd, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 2, 2018 - 6:00pm to 1:00am

What is it: Party starts at 6pm with an outdoor BBQ ($5), beer garden and not live music. It then transitions inside at 8pm where Malloomba Boogie Band will be rocking the hall. The only fitting theme for this event can be REDNECK! Start digging out the plaid now! Tickets will be available soon for $15.
This is a 19+ event. All net proceeds support the running and maintaining of the Beaver Creek Community Hall and property.


Live Music – Montreal’s Matt Stern

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 2, 2018 – 8:00pm to $10:00pm

What is it: Matt Stern is a wonderful Canadian musician and internationally touring singer and songwriter who is making waves with his infectious melodies and his authentic, heart-centered lyrics. Matt Stern is a global artist dedicated to expanding authentic expression and creating a deep sense of community. His positive message and soulful melodies are spreading within Canada and worldwide. Born in Montreal, his songs have already reached audiences in Japan, France, Germany and Nicaragua. Because of his international reach, he can speak many languages and has performed in Spanish, French, Japanese and German, among many others! Since releasing his new album, Magic, produced by Joby Baker on Prospect Lake, Matt ventured to the West Coast and will be touring Vancouver Island this year, along with musical projects in Hawai'i, California, Montreal and Japan.


What A Feeling, A Celebration of Music

When: Sunday June 3, 2018 - 6:00pm

What is it: Portal Players Dramatic Society Presents, The Capitol Glee & Wee Glee Singers and the Capitol Sea Notes Chorus in A Celebration of Music - What a Feeling. Directed by Janet Schlackl & Sandy Bouleau.  


Live Music – Logan McKillop & Madeleine Roger

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Tuesday June 5, 2018 – 7:00pm to 9:00pm

What is it: Madeleine Roger is a contemporary folksinger from Winnipeg, Canada. While accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, it is her artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her captivating voice with vivid lyricism and a maturity beyond her years. A former thespian and a lifelong traveler, she is prone to absorbing stories and questioning the way that things are, creating songs with imaginative melodies and honesty that bares truths about being alive. Logan McKillop is a songwriter/guitarist and storyteller from the small town of Onanole, MB. Between touring from coast to coast throughout Canada, having released an impressive 20 song debut album (Prairie Sky, 2013), and being a sought-after accompanist/recording artist, Logan is quickly becoming a staple in Manitoba’s folk/roots music scene. With an eclectic blend of influences from raw folk, smooth jazz, energy fueled bluegrass to lonesome country; Logan McKillop will appeal to audiences’ young and old.

 

Butterfly Effect - A Butterfly Release Fundraiser

Where: Blair Park, 4940 Margaret Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 9, 2018 – 11:00am to 2:00pm

What is it: Our annual butterfly release event celebrates the transformation from one stage of life to another, paying symbolic tribute to the loved ones we have lost. Each person who buys a butterfly to release will receive an individually packed butterfly, ready to break free and take flight at our mass release location on event day. Join us Saturday, June 9 at Blair Park. Event starts at 11am, release at 12:30. Everyone welcome! We will have music, kids activities, food, and more. :)


Big Dance of at Char’s

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 9, 2018 – 8:00pm to 10:00pm

What is it: With Nick ‘Doc’ Dokter, Roly Sandoval, Sig Schnellert, Gavin Dixon. Big Pacific is a band that runs the gamut of original blues/rock 70s music, in the style of Cream, Little Feat and even Huey Lewis and the News. Fans of guitar-driven, blues-based classic rock will want to keep their ears open for Big Pacific this fall. The south island-based band has wrapped up production on its eponymously-titled EP Big Pacific, featuring four original new songs recorded in drummer Nick Dokter’s Ladysmith studio and engineered by its ‘fifth member’, Ron Obvious Vermuelen. Big Pacific wears its influences proudly: listeners will be reminded of a gamut of 70s music, from Cream to Little Feat and even Huey Lewis and the News, all wrapped in the tight professionalism of musicians who have entertained audiences across Canada and around the globe.


Live Music – Shaun Rawlins & Tyler Bartfai

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Wednesday June 13, 2018 – 7:00pm to 9:00pm

What is it: Tyler Bartfai and Shaun Rawlins are hitting the road again this summer to bring their music and stories to you. They are two independent singer-songwriters with influences ranging from folk, blues, pop, and roots. Tyler Bartfai is a singer-songwriter from coastal Powell River B.C. His writing is influenced by a variety of genres including blues, roots, folk, and pop. Specifically, from artists such as Eric Clapton, JJ Cale, John Mayer, and Bob Dylan. His emotionally driven lyrics draw on many of life's relatable ebbs and flows. Tyler Bartfai and The Stowaways have just finished a live off the floor EP and video session 'The Score is Posted'. They hope to start a full studio album later this year.

 

Elite Dance Academy - Presents New York, New Work 

Where: Port Alberni ADSS Theatre, 4000 Roger Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 15-16, 2018 – 6:30pm to 9:00pm

What is it: Come on out and see Elite Dance Academy’s students’ year end recital. First half of the show is “New York, New York” followed by “Lets Dance” for the second half which includes a selection of our competitive groups and recreational classes. We have 2 shows which have both sold out in the past couple of years so don’t delay in buying tickets. Click the link below for online sales. We do have some tickets on hand available to buy in the studio office also. (Office is open 3pm-3:30pm Monday-Thursday as well as 3pm-5:30pm Wednesdays and 4:30pm-5:30pm on Thursdays).


Live Music – Lazy Mike & Carson Mallon Dance Party

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Friday June 15, 2018 – 8:00pm to 10:00pm

What is it: Old Time Blues and Blues Originals by the Father/Son Guitar Harmonica Blues Duo show Cd Release Party. Lazy Mike & Carson Mallon Father and son team Lazy Mike and Carson Mallon have been a mainstay of the Vancouver Island blues scene for the better part of a decade in various projects including Lazy Mike & the Rockin' Recliners. Steeped in traditional early electric blues, this duo's song selection draws from a wide range of artists, notably Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Johnny Young, and Jimmy Reed, in addition to performing several original compositions. Lazy Mike Mallon, harmonica, and Carson Mallon, guitar, each sing and weave their instrumentation to bring a unique take on traditional roots and blues music.


19+ LGBTQ+ and Allies Dance/Social

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 16, 2018 – 9:30pm to 12:00pm

What is it: A social gathering that will include dancing, games, prizes. LGBTQ+ focus and friends/allies are welcome.

 

Live Music from Mexico – Jarocho & Zeferino

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Friday June 22, 2018 – 8:00pm to 10:00pm

What is it: Radio Jarocho plays the rowdy, upbeat, and at times melancholic music of the countryside of Veracruz, Mexico, and has been mixing it with the sounds of New York’s urban life for over ten years. Having recently joined forces with son jarocho legend Zenen Zeferino, they deliver performances that are passionate, energetic, and true to the roots of the genre. Radio Jarocho & Zenen Zeferino have played concerts at festivals and venues in the US east coast, including Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Celebrate Mexico Now! and Celebrate Brooklyn. They just released "Rios de Norte y Sur" (Rivers of North and South), their first studio production together. With this album, Radio Jarocho & Zenen Zeferino celebrate the music that unites Veracruz and New York, Mexico and the United States through original songs and new arrangements for old jarocho tunes, offering a modern take on a traditional genre by fusing it with sounds that have become part of New York City's musical fabric -- flamenco, cumbia, rock, baroque, and jazz. They will be touring British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest in the summer of 2018.

 

Writer’s Workshop with Caitlin Hicks

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Thursday June 28, 2018 – 3:00pm to 5:00pm

What is it: Caitlin Hicks is an author, international playwright, and acclaimed performer in British Columbia, Canada. Monologues from several of her plays were featured in Smith & Kraus’ series Best Women’s Stage Monologues (New York). She also wrote the play, later adapted for the screen, Singing the Bones, debuting at Montreal World Film Festival. A Theory of Expanded Love, her debut novel, won: iBooks Best New Fiction (Spring 2015); Somerset Awards ( Literary Fiction); Best Inspirational Fiction: Next Generation Indie Awards; BRONZE book of the year (Literary Fiction) INDIEFAB Awards, Silver Medal for Inspirational Fiction with Readers' Favorite and JDC Top Must Read Books of 2015.


Hand Drum Workshop - "Voodoo" Dave McGrath

Where: Char’s Landing, 4815 Argyle Street, Port Alberni

When: Saturday June 30, 2018 – 3:00pm to 5:00pm

What is it: Finding your groove with hand drums:

Experience the profound effect drumming can have on your life. Learn the basics of hand drumming in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. A great way to relieve stress. Dave is an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and performer of African and Latin American rhythms and loves to share his passion for percussion. Tickets $20 pre-registration recommended. Drums available on request.
