The City of Port Alberni has an amazing health care infrastructure for a community of its size. The Alberni Valley is a part of the Central Island health service delivery area of the Vancouver Island Health Authority. The Vancouver Island Heath Authority provide healthcare services that include: acute care facilities; home care; several residential health care facilities; environmental and public health; and mental health and addictions. Port Alberni also offer an array of heath care professional, as well as alternative healthcare choices such as General Practitioners, Dentists, Orthodontists, Optometrists, and Chiropractors.
The modern West Coast General Hospital (WCGH) is central to the Alberni Valley's health care. WCGH was built in 2001 and has 43 beds and a 32 bed multi-level Care Unit. Services include: first rate radiology and ultrasound; bronchoscopy; gastroscopy; laboratory facilities; a large and well-equipped Physical Medicine Department (physiotherapy and occupational therapy); Intensive Care Unit; psychiatric programs including in-patient and out-patient; and a day care.
