Glenwood is a quaint, central neighbourhood in Port Alberni. Its northern end is bordered by the greenery of the forest and Roger Creek and is close to other neighbourhoods such as Uplands and Echo. Roger Street runs on the southern end of the neighbourhood and contains the majority of commercial properties in the area, along with some on Tenth Avenue. Many homes in this area benefit from easy access to necessities while still maintaining peace and quiet on their own block.
With a bubbling creek on one side, shopping options on another, and a beautiful outdoor fitness facility on yet another side - Glenwood is smack in the middle of all the amenities on your wishlist. Roger Creek has nature trails for the family and a water park for the kids. The town’s high school, Alberni District Secondary School, is located across the street from a large outdoor track, Multiplex, and the Alberni Athletic Hall. Just down the street are restaurants, repair shops, and medical offices. It doesn’t stop there, either. Neighbouring areas right on the border with Glenwood contain North Island College, an aquatic centre, museum, library, and even more shopping options. Just a short drive will get you to the best bear-watching place in town, at Victoria Quay. Bears are often spotted across the Somass River, safely away from onlookers. Glenwood is a key placement for families, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone wanting some more convenience and entertainment in their lives.
Real estate listings in this area are a mix of commercial and residential properties. The residential homes are made of single-family suburban homes, duplexes, mid-century houses, ranchers, and some apartment buildings. Although there is a mixture of both residential and commercial properties, residential listings are the majority. The proximity to the local high school, sports amenities, and retail stores make these properties extremely preferable for families.
Commercial properties are varied and include buildings like restaurants, hair salons, offices, medical centers, retail stores, and industrial properties. There are also schools, an ambulance bay, and a school bus yard. Most properties are near the intersection of Tenth Avenue and Roger Street and continue to run in each direction. There are few commercial properties within residential neighbourhoods - they are mostly on higher traffic streets.
Want to get into shape but don’t know where to start? The track at Bob Dailey Stadium is a perfect place to get in your steps for the day. Even if the sun has set, the track is lit up making it perfect for a cool, evening run on the rubber surface. The oval track has a field in the middle, often the site for soccer and football games. Bleachers along the side offer a resting place for in-between laps, or for those that want to watch a game happening on the field. Off one end of the track is an outdoor fitness park that uses body weight to conduct an effective workout. This is a place to exercise at your own pace while you take in some fresh air.
Next to Bob Dailey Stadium is the Alberni Valley Multiplex - home of the AV Bulldogs hockey team! This building contains two ice arenas and a concession stand. The smaller rink is mainly for hockey leagues and general ice skating. The larger rink has seating for over 1800 people and is the place to watch the Bulldogs win at hockey. Port Alberni hockey fans are passionate about their team, making each game a very memorable and exciting experience.
The lush forest bordering Glenwood has a beautiful park on its western edge. Roger Creek Park contains several walking trails and an outdoor water park. On hot summer days, many families enjoy having lunch at a shaded picnic table then letting the kids burn off steam in the waterpark. Not into that much noise? No problem - the park is very large and has additional seating, calm trails, and plenty of peace and quiet.
Rollerskating, rollerblading, indoor soccer, and floor hockey all have a home at Glenwood Sports Centre. When sessions aren’t booked, this is also the main site for special events, weddings, and a kid favourite for birthday parties. The building is large and wheelchair accessible. Plus, it’s directly next to Bob Dailey Stadium making it a convenient addition to the fitness options in the area.
When the original Athletic Hall tragically burned in a fire, instead of rebuilding it on the same site it was decided to be put in the Glenwood area. It was a smart choice. Located directly next to the Alberni Valley Multiplex, the Alberni Athletic Hall is yet another option for sports and special events. This is both a sports and a community centre. Many special events like rock and gem show, craft fairs, and massive garage sales are featured here yearly. Drop-in sports like basketball or badminton are also available.
Once a year in September, the city comes together for a weekend of fun at the Alberni District Fall Fair. This fair contains a midway with rides, carnival games, farm animals, live music, contests, and plenty of fair food to choose from. It is a local favorite event in the hub of Glenwood.
