At the heart of Vancouver Island lies one of British Columbia’s finest jewels – Great Central Lake. A well-kept secret, Great Central Lake is in fact one of British Columbia’s most beautiful warm water lakes. Great Central Lake is 35 kilometers long, with an area of 49 square kilometers, making it the third largest lake on Vancouver Island.
Carved by glaciers during the last ice age the lake is long and narrow, beautifully nestled beneath low mountains, with majestic second growth forest hugging nearly the entire shoreline. It is this make-up that has allowed Great Central Lake to remain so wild and natural.
Great Central Lake is home to large (by Vancouver Island standards) trout. It’s also the headwaters of the Stamp River, which is world famous for both Steelhead and Salmon fishing. It’s not uncommon to see Black Bear, Sitka Deer, or Raccoon. The lucky visitor to Great Central Lake may also catch a glimpse of a Cougar or Vancouver Island Wolf.
In a world that is becoming increasingly hectic, Great Central Lake is an oasis to get away from it all. It is a place where time slows down and priceless memories are made. The lake’s its warm waters also make for the perfect place to enjoy adventures of the…human kind. Swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, boating, kayaking, canoeing, wake surfing are all common summer activities on the lake. Around the lake you will find the perfect terrain for hiking, camping, and ATVing.
Two of the lake’s most popular spots are: Della Falls, which at 440 meters are the highest waterfalls in Canada; and Dorothy Creek where the glacier fed creek has formed a natural waterslide into the lake.
Activity on Great Central Lake revolves around the Great Central Lake RV Resort and Marina, which offers RV sites, a boat launch, moorage and breath-taking views of the lake. On summer evenings you can enjoy authentic Jamaican jerk chicken and pork at Marley’s Joint. But, be sure to get their early, as Marley’s Joint is so popular, they sell out of food within an hour or two. Great Central Lake RV Resort and Marina and Marley’s Joint, are owned and operated by Mark and Danielle Marley, and pays homage too…you guessed it…Bob Marley. In fact, Mark and Bob share a family bloodline.
Real estate on Great Central Lake is scarce. Those wishing to own a home or property on Great Central Lake have three rare options: an RV at the new Trestle RV Resort who’s named after the historic train trestle crossing part of the lake; a float home along the banks of the lake; or one of the few private islands.
Great Central Lake is truly a piece of paradise on Vancouver Island, so much so that I feel a little guilty letting the secret out. But like all good things, Great Central Lake must be experienced to truly be appreciated.
