Westporte Place is a well-known residential subdivision with a reputation for being one of the safest and best neighbourhoods for families in Port Alberni. These suburban homes range from single-family homes to townhouses and condominiums. Westporte Place is located on the Northern end of the city, near Somass River. The surrounding area is quiet and relaxed, with easy access to main roads and amenities. Nearby is Tsumas-as Elementary School, Riverbend Cafe & General Store, Naesgaard’s Farm & Market, Clutesi Marina, and plenty of countryside to bike through. Within reach is River Road offering a route into North Alberni, or you can head the other direction out towards Sproat Lake. It is a suitable place for those that want a nice home in a quiet, safe, fuss-free neighbourhood that has nearby access to all the city’s amenities and recreational facilities.
Real estate in Westporte Place is primarily residential. These suburban, single-family homes are a combination of ranchers and split levels. Many are two-storey homes suitable for families. There are a small selection of townhouses and condominiums, but single-family homes make up the majority of real estate listings. There are very few commercial properties in the general area, making this an area suitable for first time home buyers, retirees, and those wanting to upgrade their existing home to a better build and neighbourhood.
Naesgaard’s is a family run farm and market stand that sells local produce, gardening pots, and unique gifts. You can’t beat their homegrown summer corn on a hot day, or other choices of fresh, seasonal produce from their farm. They have the largest selection of clay pots on Vancouver Island - you can’t miss their iconic “Pot Sale” sign on River Road! Residents from Westporte Place and surrounding areas enjoy the convenience of having high quality, local produce available so close to home. There is also a selection of unique gifts to buy that are made locally and around the world.
A popular pastime for valley residents is tubing down the Stamp River. This is a fun group activity for those lazy summer days. The start point is at the Alberni Fish and Game Club (also known as the gun range), and residents float down until they reach Paper Mill Dam Park. Access to the beginning of the path is only a short drive from Westporte Place. It is a recreational activity popular for those that want to relax with friends and spend a few hours in the sun.
The newly renovated Riverbend Cafe is the perfect place to grab a coffee, a bite to eat, or a last-minute handmade gift. It’s a great pitstop for a bike ride along the river and as a place to pick up a jug of milk on the way home from a day at work. The owners have local, artisan goods for sale which makes it quite unique for gift shopping. It has all the conveniences of a typical convenience store, but with that small town charm making it a true valley gem.
Nearby, the Pacific Rim Highway leads out to the pristine Sproat Lake. This is the place to be in the summer months and Westporte Place has easy access to the main road getting you there. Westporte Place’s location near the northern end of the city means it is already as close as you can get without being out of city limits. Locals and tourists alike usually stop in at the Sproat Lake Provincial Park for a freshwater swim, a weekend camping trip, a place to sunbathe, and to check out the prehistoric petroglyphs. On the way home, you can’t forget stopping for ice cream at Tseshaht Market after all that swimming! Are you planning on heading to the lake?
Only a short distance towards North Alberni is the Kitsuksis Dyke Trail. This is a popular spot for walking, jogging, and catching up with friends. The path is developed on both sides of Kitsuksis Creek and has surrounding amenities such as a dog park, Blair Park, playgrounds, and washrooms. The terrain is quite flat, making it ideal for most fitness abilities. As you walk along the trail, it follows the creek as you encounter more and more forest. You may even forget you are still in the city with how dense the trees and the sounds of the singing birds become. There is still easy access to main roads along several points on the path, making it accessible for many users. Popular with dog walkers and families, it is a convenient place to get in some exercise before going home for the day, or having a Sunday afternoon picnic in the park.
